| The United States is widely known as the land of opportunity. In their search for that dream many immigrants arrive and travel this land on foot, in car or by plane. Whowever, they also arrive in cargo trains that everyday unknowingly carry hundreds of immigrants(and not immigrants).
“It is something that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. It is playing with death,” said a veteran world traveler from Chihuahua, México, who says he first crossed the border 25 years ago.
“My mother told me that I have been born here in the United States and so I came here one winter. I nearly froze to death. I had to jump from the train. It was so hard to get down because my body would not respond to me anymore…I was getting stiff. I crossed from Valentina, close to El Paso, Texas”, he added implying not to reveal his name.
With the same confidentiality, a Central American explained that in addition to hunger and thirst, the worst danger is the thieves.
“There are very bad people who live off of muggings and robberies. Many times, even without money, they kill innocent people just for fun. You have to be very careful”, he said.
The interviewees all agreed that is always important to run from Mexican immigration officials.
“They have very bad intentions and they abused their power”, said a El Salvadoran who has traveled through Mexico and most of the United States by train and Greyhound buses.
On many occasions the danger is not just the climate, the accidents, frequent mutilations, the hunger or the risk of finding other people.
“There is a great danger when the trains go under the bridges, because the gases they produce. It is very hard to breath and you should think twice before lightning a match”, said to La Voz a young man from Mexicali, who used the cargo trains in Los Angeles.
Despite the dangers, the hunger and the obstacles it is clear that it is impossible to contain the human desire for a better life or the thrill of an adventure. It is clear that those who dreamed of a better tomorrow will keep arriving, some even by train.
